August 2025 KIC! wrap-up

August's Keep It Clean! cleanup is another one for the books! It was an overcast morning and while the temperature hovered in the high 80s, the strong ocean breeze kept our volunteers cool. We've had a lot of rain in the last couple of weeks and it's seaweed season which meant our beaches were covered in seaweed. These massive seaweed beds are an excellent habitat for all kids of sea creatures and are a frequent favorite food of our sea turtle populations; since it's also sea turtle hatching season, these seaweed beds end up feeding the turtles that come in to lay their clutches of eggs. Unfortunately, these same seaweed beds end up filled with marine debris and trash.
Our team of 13 volunteers managed to remove 97lbs on Sunday morning, nearly all of which came from the seaweed beds. I believe we even removed a half dozen different pairs of flip flops as well too! The bulk of what we removed this week was bottle caps, motor oil bottles, mylar confetti, cigarette butts, and tons of microplastics. We heavily focused on the shoreline because of the seaweed and unfortunately, I ended up covered in seaweed more than once and WOW! does it smell awful!
A huge thank you to all of our volunteers and donors! Your support is what keeps our organization moving forward and keeps boots-on-the-ground in the fight against pollution.
Our next cleanup is on 14 September 2025 and we will be meeting at the Eshleman Pavilion in South Inlet Park, Boca Raton, at 8:15AM. Interested in joining us?
