July 2025 KIC! wrap-up
Share
Our July clean-up was a success! We removed 59lbs of trash from the beach at South Inlet Park, which is much lower than previous months however, it was almost entirely glass bottles, baby wipes, and microplastics! Fifty-nine pounds does not sound like a lot until you realize that microplastics such as broken plastic or plastic bottle caps weigh fractions of an ounce, so our team of 7 volunteers managed to remove a lot of itsy bitsy plastics from the beach this time around. The nesting turtles and their hatchlings will be happy to not have to crawl through so much trash!
Since the 4th of July was the previous weekend and Boca Raton had experienced severe thunderstorms all week, I fully expected the beach to be much dirtier than it was, as other beaches in the area are still pretty trashed after the 4th. The storms did wash a lot of sargassum seaweed on to the beach which ended up being a boon for our team, as that ended up trapping a lot of the smaller plastics we removed from the beach. After 90 minutes cleaning up, we were all drenched in sweat and had raked in a total of 59lbs of trash removed.
A huge thank you to all of our volunteers and donors! Your support is what keeps our organization moving forward and keeps boots-on-the-ground in the fight against pollution.
Our next cleanup is on 10 August 2025 and we will be meeting at the Eshleman Pavilion in South Inlet Park, Boca Raton, at 8:15AM. Interested in joining us?
