June 2025 KIC! wrap-up

Sunday was a S C O R C H E R 🔥. Even with the blistering heat and high humidity, we had a great team of 10 volunteers join us at the Eshleman Pavilion at South Inlet Park. Once again, we cleaned up an excessive amount of trash around the pavilion itself -- the groundskeepers were very happy that we were pulling trash deep from inside the giant Ficus canopy that surrounds the pavilion and surrounding park area -- and we were extra careful when cleaning up the beach as there are more and more sea turtles showing up to nest and lay eggs. Keeping the beach and surrounding habitat free of trash and marine debris is vital for ensuring these sea turtles are able to successfully nest; as sea turtles cannot move backwards, they are forced to crawl forwards at all times and this means that if they encounter an object or obstruction on their way to nest, the turtle will typically turn around and head back into the sea.Â
We were lucky this week that there was not a large amount of debris on the beach, other than miles of seaweed, and it looks like all the turtle tracks led to successful nestings. Overall, our team managed to remove approximately 291lbs of trash and debris from South Inlet Park during this cleanup! This included five different torn up and burned wooden pallets and a red bag full of sand and soaking wet clothes; I have no idea how much the red bag of trash weighed, it maxed out our 75lbs luggage scale and IÂ could barely pick up so I estimated its total weight around 100lbs.Â
As of this cleanup, Jeepers Keepers has now removed 1400lbs of trash and debris from Florida's beaches and parks and we're only halfway through the year! Now that hurricane season has started, I fully expect that our upcoming cleanups will have MUCH higher yields!
Our next cleanup is on 13 July 2025 and we will be meeting at the Eshleman Pavilion in South Inlet Park, Boca Raton, at 8:15AM. Interested in joining us?
